Dr. Rickey H. Badua
Dr. Rickey H. Badua is currently the Director of Bands and Instrumental Music at California Polytechnic State University, Pomona, CA, where he conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Brass Ensemble, teaches instrumental conducting and oversees all aspects of the instrumental music program.
Prior to his appointment at California Polytechnic State University, Pomona, Dr. Badua received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from the University of Georgia where he studied conducting with Dr. John P. Lynch. As a conducting associate, Dr. Badua conducted all six concert ensembles and assisted the University of Georgia Redcoat Marching Band and athletic bands. Dr. Badua was also the recipient of the Director’s Excellence and Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant award.
Dr. Badua’s scholarship achievements include wind band research in Saint Petersburg, Russia where he received a presidential grant from the University of Georgia to pursue research on the unpublished manuscripts of 19th century band repertoire of Italian composer, Gioachino Rossini, at the Saint Petersburg Museum of Theatrical and Musical Art. He discovered and created a modern performance edition of “Prise d’Erivan” Pas redoublé for military band and set to be published in the U.S. by Maestro & Fox Publishing in 2015.
Dr. Badua is active as a presenter and guest conductor throughout the U.S. and abroad including appearances at the Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic, Georgia Music Educator’s Association, and the National Association for Music Education-Northwest Division Conference; his most notable engagements include a guest conducting residency at the University of Illinois-Chicago and being one of the first American conductors to guest conduct the Admiralty Navy Band of St. Petersburg, Russia.
As a marching band clinician, Dr. Badua has worked with numerous high school programs throughout Washington, California, Georgia, and Hawaii and has been on staff with the Hawaii All-State Marching Band and Kamehameha Schools Marching Band in their appearances in the Tournament of Rose’s Parade in Pasadena, CA, Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York and the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington D.C.
Dr. Badua earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, WA where he also received an honorary fellowship to complete his Master of Arts in Teaching degree. He holds professional memberships in the College Music Society, National Association for Music Education and the College Band Directors National Association.
As an avid trombonist, Dr. Badua performs regularly throughout the Los Angeles area including engagements with the Symphonic Winds of the Pacific, True Brass choir and the Moravian trombone choir.
